Mall Walkers

We have a routine - Play area, Disney Store, Lego Store, Gepetto's Toy Store and the food court for lunch. Today we had to skip the play area but they didn't seem to mind since Annie was with us!

First Glimpse

We were allowed to take the bandages off today... Now we wait for the surgical tape to fall off!

Day at the Races

Without playgrounds, we're kind of lost - Luckily Uncle Brett and Aunt Traci invited us to Del Mar!

He insisted we pick the pink horse for Hayden... Only win of the day!

Distraction is Key

Best way to keep Hayden from moving? Strap her in the stroller and hand her a lollipop. First up, zoo!

She slept through lunch... Shhhh!

No Running, No Jumping, No Swimming

For THREE weeks.

Do they not have experience with toddlers?!

Hayden does not want to read. Hayden does not want to watch TV.  Hayden wants to jump.

This is what happens when you try and get her to color (and turn your back for three seconds).

We have been home for two hours.  This is going to be a LONG three weeks!

Gratitude

Our babies are home and we're overwhelmed by the offers of help, cards and gifts from near and far.

All the surprises clearly brightened her day - Thank you.

While we were checking in we saw several children come in for their cancer treatments. While eating breakfast we noticed the whole second floor of Hayden's building was dedicated to helping those babies. While waiting for Hayden to wake up, a mother came out of the double doors wearing a Hazmat suit.  She went to the nearby bathroom and we could hear her sobbing - I felt ridiculous for crying and being worried over an outpatient procedure. I cannot imagine being in any of their shoes and am very thankful for the care Rady's provides. I hope those families are surrounded with love and support and research soon eliminates all childhood cancers/diseases.

A Difficult Day

It may have been a blessing that the surgery was scheduled within 30 days - The lack of sleep and worry over the unknown was horrible. Thoughts like, "this could be her last time at the playground..." would creep in my head and I knew it had to stop but couldn't push them away. Tom would tear up when we talked about it, so we both just kind of ignored that this was really happening.

We dropped Cole off at Aunt Traci's and made our way to Rady's. When we arrived we were amazed how organized everything was - We were led to a check-in station where we finalized the paperwork and were given a pager (like they give you at Chili's). From there she was weighed and we were put in a small cubicle so we could dress her and wait for nurses.

The first nurse asked a lot of the same questions we were asked at check-in and weigh-in. I was doing okay until the anesthesiologist came in. She made a comment about putting a mask over Hayden's face and I lost it.  She was very sweet and assured me she'd take care of our baby.

Soon after the doctor came in and confirmed information... And then another nurse came to take her back. She was really great with Hayden and asked if she'd like to walk or take a caterpillar wagon.  She went with the wagon and was strapped in with her doll and paci.  She looked so tiny - I lost it again and tried my best to keep her from seeing me upset.  Thank goodness Tom held it together!  We kissed her good-bye and were led to the waiting room.

We decided sitting there was too much so we walked over to their McDonald's for breakfast.  Not even 25 minutes later, our pager buzzed.  We ran over and met with her doctor - She did it!  The hole was closed and he opted not to take the extra skin.  We were led back to the waiting room and told she would wake up shortly.

Longest. Wait. Ever.

Just hoping all would be okay was excruciating.  We waited for almost an hour when we buzzed again.  They led us back and a nurse was holding her, pointing and saying, "There's Mommy!"  Seeing her awake and okay... Can't describe it.  I grabbed her and sobbed.

She was very floppy and wouldn't open her eyes for awhile - In order for us to leave she had to drink apple juice and she wouldn't touch it.  So we cuddled.  And cuddled some more.

After 45 minutes or so, she had some juice and they took out her IV. Shortly after we were allowed to dress her and take her home!

We walked out the double doors and our Hayden came back.  Not sure if she thought she was staying, or what, but all signs of the anesthesia disappeared and she was immediately animated and chatty.

Probably relieved it was all over, just like us!

Elephant Trunk

At Hayden's two year wellness check (July 9th), we were told we should schedule a consultation for her umbilical hernia. It obviously wasn't closing, so our pediatrician thought it would be good to speak with an expert and get his opinion.

Rady Children's Hospital - July 22nd

Within two minutes the doctor looked at her and decided she'd be a good candidate. He then stated that if we opted for surgery, we'd have to do it within 30 days due to insurance. Excuse me?! Tom and I assumed this was just an initial conversation (why he stayed at work)!

I asked the doctor what he thought and he said if it hadn't closed in two years, it wasn't going to. He then offered two options: 1) close the hole and see if the excess skin would sink in her belly 2) lop off the extra skin before closing the hole

I told him that I wanted to ensure Hayden would be comfortable in bikinis and dating (when she's 30, of course) and asked his opinion - His response, "Well, she'll never be Heidi Klum... But I'd lop off the extra skin." I wanted to say SO many things, but I simply said we'd be in touch.

I called Tom and we debated everything. We wish we could wait until she was older (or at least winter), but it wasn't an option. Surgery scheduled for Friday, August 22nd!

A Love of Samples

Every morning I ask the kids what they feel like doing - Hayden yells, "Costco!" and Cole screams, "Yes! Costco is the BEST!" They love hunting each aisle for samples and really, can you blame them?

I try and limit them (and my wallet) to a once a week visit.  Made an exception when Princess Sofia requested a royal visit today - She even got a smoothie out of me!

No Time for Rest

Grandpa and Uncle Justin came in for the week and we kept them pretty busy with walking the waterfront, exploring Temecula, swimming at the Welk, blowing bubbles at an outdoor concert and some deep sea fishing!

Koalafornia

Another beautiful day at the zoo - Cole and Hayden were thrilled Annie was able to join us!
