Del Mar Races

Yesterday was a beautiful day to escape our apartment, enjoy their Food Truck Festival/Family Fun Zone and catch a race or two with friends!

We didn't leave millionaires but we still had a great afternoon - Maybe next year the horses won't fail us!

Can't Win

With Tom back at work full-time and Grandma and Grandpa gone, yesterday was my first day alone with the kiddos.

Fortunately, my happy boy planned his return for the same day.

He's still not napping and we're sleeping on the family room floor at night, but I'm content avoiding the sleep issues as long as he's smiling (for now). Why?

Because they've switched roles - Our newborn that only cried when she was cold or hungry now cries all. the. time. If her eyes are open, she's sobbing. Three week growth spurt? Colic? Her umbilical hernia? She's realized we don't know what we're doing and wants new parents? All of the above? We go to the doctor on August 6th. Hopefully he can read her mind!

*I couldn't manage to get a shot without Hayden or the blocks being blurry... Suppose I didn't have a lot of time between tears/spit-up but a portrait lens is the next major purchase!

Godzilla Takes San Diego

Missing: Sweet toddler with fabulous disposition.

Reward being offered for his return.

Some of our lovely conversations:

Mama: Do you want to wear the green shirt or the red shirt?
Cole: Green.
M: Okay, great choice!
(Start to put on him...)
C: NO! Red one.
M: Okay, red it is.
(Start to put on him...)
C: NO!!!!!!! GREEN ONE!!!!!!!!!
M: Fine, last time. Green one it is.
(Start to put on him...)
C: ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!! NO SHIRT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mama: Want to go to the playground?
Cole: No ayground.
M: You sure? You love the playground!
C: Stay here.
M: Okay... Let's stay here.
C: ayground...
(Lip out... Sad face)
M: I thought so! Let's get your shoes on.
C: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AYGROUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Fall to floor... Pound floor with fists.... Sob uncontrollably...)

And... End scene.

Not quite sure what happened around these parts... Cole has given up his crib, refuses to take naps/go down at night and has turned into a raging lunatic.

Is it Hayden? The night he came into our room late one night and saw me cuddling her in our bed? Not wanting to miss out? All the attention he got when Tom was home the first week? All the presents from us, friends and family? Now having Grandma/Grandpa as an audience?

We haven't seen a tantrum for months and now we're dealing with an indecisive, whiney mess just about every moment of every day. When trying to get him down he throws himself into the sides of the crib, arches his back and screams like a banchee. We've tried reassurance, kind words, hugs, firm words, rewards, loud words, threats, and ignoring him until he calms... Add Supernanny's bedtime tricks, sleeping on his floor, taking away his pacifier/seahorse (aka manipulation tools/weapons), and long drives (one at 4am... poor Tom!) to the list as well. I'm sure it's a mix of Hayden, a need for attention and pure exhaustion - It's extremely difficult wanting to do something to make it better and not knowing what the heck to do. Not wanting to condone this behavior in fear of him thinking it's acceptable, yet also ensuring he doesn't feel slighted by the new addition is a fine line.

I'm sure Grandpa and Grandma Lundquist hoped for a nice, fun week with their lovely grandchildren. Fortunately we squeezed in a few happy moments before they left on Saturday!

Two Weeks

Already!? Time is flying. With Cole, we didn't leave the house for weeks. With Hayden, we were at the playground and Target the day after we were released from the hospital. With a toddler, one can't exactly lounge on the couch!

Hayden was borderline-jaundice at birth and our July 5th appointment to check her color showed she was down to 7lbs 14oz. She tends to spit up a lot, so we were relieved to see 8lbs 7oz on the scale last week (July 11th). Hopefully the number will continue to head in the right direction. Her brother slept in 45 minute intervals, but this one is a sleeper. Two to three hour stretches, even longer at night. Reason for celebration, but since she's following in her brother's footsteps with the puking/spitting up we'll hold off for now!

Cole is starting to realize she's sticking around and is very clear on what should be done with her. If Tom is holding her, "Mama hold it a baby, Dada play basketball." Or "Baby swing, play trucks." He's learning that certain things must wait if she's eating or fussy, and seems to really understand how helpless she is. Yesterday Grandma was in the shower and I was in his room playing Legos with him. He left for a second and came running in - "Mama! Hurry! Come on, come on! Hurry!" I followed him out to the family room and wondered what it was - I assumed an ambulance driving by was the reason for such dramatics but he stopped in front of her swing - She had spit up everywhere. I was so proud of him and couldn't believe he knew to come get me. A lot of hugs, praise and ice cream for dessert!

Going to the Chapel

Yesterday was Aunt Traci and Uncle Brett's big day!

They arrived in San Diego earlier in the week to take care of last minute wedding details - They were so sweet to find time in their busy schedule to stop by and meet Hayden!

The next day we tested out his ring bearer suit - Thought it would be a struggle to get it on him but he saw it and said, "Dada work shirt." Once it was on, "Like Dada, let's go work!" If only we could guarantee the happy couple he'd make it down the aisle...

Grandma arrived the morning of the Rehearsal Dinner to help us out during all the wedding festivities - She couldn't wait to meet her new granddaughter!

We went to the church and didn't know what to expect - With four flower girls and three ring bearers, anything could happen! Cole was a bit hesitant, but thanks to Dada in the back of the church and Mama waving Dora fruit snacks (aka 'Dora special treat') from the third pew, he made it down!

Wedding Day - Such a handsome boy!

Adding 150 guests to the church didn't stop the little ones... The girls marched with confidence and the boys trailed behind. Ours was the last one, but he came running when he saw Mama waving a bag of M&M's! We couldn't believe it!!

After the ceremony we brought him back to the house - A lot of responsibility being a ring bearer... Finally a moment to relax after all that pressure!

Showered with Love

It's difficult being so far away from our families, but having such wonderful friends and neighbors makes it a bit easier. From texts to emails... Gifts, meals and visits... We're incredibly blessed.

We haven't been good with pulling out the camera each time someone stops by, but we captured Cole and Colin playing during yesterday's meet-n-greet. It's clear they share a love of trucks.

Slowly but Surely

Four days in and the closest he'll get...

One of the benefits of having a new sister... She picks out fantastic presents!

The other? Having Dada home to play trains!

Pretty sure he'll keep her.

Visiting Hours

I was very excited for Cole to get to the hospital on Tuesday morning. I thought he'd yell, "Mama!" and immediately run to me. After all, he hadn't seen me since Sunday! Not so much. He took one look at me holding his sister and decided we were to be ignored.

At least Dada and Wubbzy got some smiles!

July 4th - Released at 12:30pm - Welcome home!

Cole fortunately warmed up a bit and showed the baby his room and read to her.

We taught him the importance of being gentle and rocking her slowly... Later in the afternoon we pushed the swing and he came running - He stopped the swing, said "Slowly, slowly, slowly" and barely moved it. Protective already!

Rather than venture out to view the fireworks, decided it was best we stay home and pick a name for our sweet little girl. TBD Zanetti did have a nice ring to it but knew that wouldn't fly with the grandparents. Hayden has been a favorite of ours for years... Kenison is my maternal grandmother's maiden name. We think it's perfect, just like her.

*Good thing we didn't head downtown... San Diego fireworks went off all at once! Entire show was a bust!
