On Sunday we walked over to the hospital at 11:20pm. Yes, you read that correctly. We walked. No worries, it's only five blocks away... I hoped it would induce me naturally, Tom didn't want to pay for parking!
After two hours of paperwork/questions, I was given the 12-hour medication that would help me dilate. Apparently most don't get contractions until later in the process but mine started at 1:40am. Yeah, a whole ten minutes. I was graced with one every 2-4 minutes for 12 hours. Awesome. At 1:40pm I was checked again and only 1cm so I was given a 4-hour medication at 2:35pm. Pain medication (ANYTHING!) was kindly requested at 2:45pm. It's a bit fuzzy for a few hours - TV... Naps... Rounds 2 and 3... I got the 4th round of this super drug at 6pm but at this point it wasn't so super. What else you have, Doc?! Pitocin at 7pm... Epidural at 7:15pm (I pretty much terrified the anesthesiologist when I started sobbing after the needle entered but I couldn't help it. Tom was across the room and I started thinking about Cole and my fear of being paralyzed if he did it wrong. Clearly lovely, happy thoughts). At 9pm I was told things wouldn't happen until the morning, so to bed we went. At 12:35am my water broke, epidural wore off (First 16 hours of contractions were CAKE compared to these final moments!!!) and we heard the beautiful words "It's a GIRL!" at 1:21am.
Best part? No sign of a fever so she wasn't rushed to the Special Care Nursery like her big brother. I got to hold her for an hour before the standard tests and she got to stay in the room with us.
Pure joy!
