Lockdown

This morning I turned on the news and saw that there was an active shooter five blocks from Cole's school. I knew that he was going to recess soon and grabbed my phone to call the school. I saw that I had an email from his Director and was relieved to see that they were aware and already taking precautions. (It's so obvious now that the police made their rounds/calls within minutes but in that moment I panicked).

The standoff lasted all morning. We were so thankful the shooter never left his building or hurt any innocent bystanders.

While we never imagined our child would be in such a situation, we were happy that we had a 'fire drill' to see how the school handled it. We were very impressed with the safety precautions they had in place, their constant updates and their early release procedures.

Cole came home thinking it was merely bad weather that kept them in his classroom all day. While it's very comforting knowing the staff loves our children and will do what they can to shield them from bad people and thoughts, we hope they never, ever have to repeat their safety plan again.
